The WWF Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI) drives change in the local seafood industry by working throughout the seafood supply chain to:
- Shift demand away from over-exploited marine species, and enabling sustainable seafood decisions
They do this by distilling complex science into easy-to-use tools categorizing seafood per a ‘traffic light’ system, Green= Best choice ; Orange = Think twice, Red = Don’t Buy
A cornerstone of the WWF-SASSI programme is to drive an increase in awareness of sustainable seafood by asking three questions: ‘
- What are you eating?
- Where is it from and,
- How was it caught or farmed?
This information enables full traceability and transparency within the culinary industry and translates into an easy-to use decision-making tool for chefs & consumers.
WWF-SASSI AND THE JHP GOURMET GUIDE™
For the last two years, the JHP Gourmet Guide™ has proudly partnered with WWF-SASSI in an effort to create a philosophy of responsible sourcing of sustainable seafood within the industry. The Haute Green Philosophy award in partnership with WWF-SASSI is aimed at helping the culinary industry along its sustainability journey and is awarded to a restaurant that celebrates local talent and the indigenous produce that the country has to offer.
