Named after the year of origin of Steenberg Estate, on which this popular bistro is situated, it wows all day from breakfast to early-evening tapas, with lingering lunches in-between. Local, free range and organic produce features prominently on the menu. Chef Kerry Kilpin’s commitment to sustainability and responsible resourcing, like their support of Abalobi (buying a daily basket of fish directly from fishermen), and her passion of cooking different types of sustainable seafood, is admirable. Favourite ingredients can be spotted – asparagus in summer and Jerusalem artichokes in winter – as can her classic French style with an Asian influence. She ‘cooks with love’ and is inspired by her travels, eating out, other chefs, the traditions of her multi-cultured kitchen team, and beautiful cookbooks.
Look out for the breakfast Benedict, at lunch the slow-roast lamb, and for tapas the choice is endless. If overwhelmed allow the friendly, informative staff to select for you – perhaps the fish tacos, zesty calamari or the ever-popular, yet simple patatas bravas.
